Public Speaking and Debating Club at the University of Luxembourg

Want to hone your public speaking ability in English? Chisel your debating techniques? Gain confidence in front of camera for online meetings or presentations?

Well this club is for you, whatever your level, whatever your mother-tongue.

Public speaking has been recognised by the World Economic Forum as a skill worth mastering in life as it is so integral to all forms of communicating your ideas.

Through this Presenting & Debating Club we will develop an all-round approach to performing on stage, in front of camera and in conversation / debate with others.

Sessions will be formulated with the new cohort of students but here are some ideas of topics to cover:

- How to present your thoughts succinctly and confidently in a meeting or group setting - Stand on stage or in front of a crowd to deliver a presentation
- Pitch an idea to colleagues or even potential sponsors
- Debate thoughtfully and critically with the opposing side of a discussion
- Develop deeper critical thinking and journalistic scrutiny
- Learn how to set your camera and lighting perfectly for online conference calls - Stage presence
- What to do with voice, hands and movement

For so many people, public speaking is terrifying. There is no quick fix, it’s simply practice and repeat. This society aims to create a club which is open to all and supportive of one another’s work.

This society is open to all students of the University of Luxembourg and Miami University Dolibois European Center (MUDEC).
And so you will also mingle with people across campuses and from different countries.
We can’t wait to meet you this September! Whether you’re a seasoned speaker or starting from scratch, this club is open to all, because we can always learn from one another and need to also learn how to gain the listening ear of all.

So, join Lisa Burke for a warm and friendly collaborative journey to improve your public speaking and debating skills.

A bit about Lisa Burke and Public Speaking

Lisa started public speaking club at the age of 11, when she began secondary school in London. There, with knees wobbling and great trepidation, she and her team went on, year after year, to win regional and national competitions across London.

After studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Lisa accidentally got the chance to work at Sky News, where she remained as a presenter on air for a decade.

Since then, Lisa has moved with her family to Abu Dhabi, back to London and now Luxembourg. Throughout this time she has continued to devote time to science, journalism and music.

Lisa is a trained classical singer and will use breathing techniques to help teach the art of voice projection and intonation.

In Luxembourg, Lisa created RTL Today and continues to now present and produce the weekly podcasts In Conversation with Lisa Burke.
